Synopsis

On the grassy plains of 2017, Wule had been honing his skills on the Morin khuur, also known as the Horse Head Fiddle, for an entire month. His dedication was tested when his beloved instrument was irreparably damaged on the eve of the competition. His parents, struggling to make ends meet, desperately sought a way to buy him a new one. A kind soul suggested they add water to the horse milk they sold, which would bring in just enough extra income to replace the fiddle. Though Wule was unaware of the scheme, his parents would do anything to see their son's dream come true.

Director's Statement

This is the first Mongolian language road movie in China. At a time when moral decay and counterfeiting are commonplace, there are still children on the grassland who protect the last bottom line with pure hearts; good begets good, and evil leads to evil. With the use of real-life dialogue, the dialogue is mixed with Mongolian and Chinese; there is no intention to make the main character wear a Mongolian robe, but the costumes are all dressed the same as the reality; it shows the intangible cultural heritage such as milking horses, Mongolian leather production, embroidery, "Gusl" rap, etc. The beautiful scenery where the small animals live and the lives of the poor figures form a contrast. An essential character in the characterization of the boy, Wule, is the one who changes the storyline. The delay in his mother's illness due to the fake medicine she took leads to her death. Although his father's new wife treats him well, he still misses his dead mother and hates counterfeiting. The heroine, Zula, is already pregnant and believes quite strongly in karma and would have disagreed with the counterfeiting, but being a stepmother, it is not convenient to stop it. Finally, after being indirectly educated by the strange old man, she is determined not to participate in counterfeiting anymore. The main character Baiyin, under pressure, decides to mix the drink with water. Still, his heart is not at ease, and he eventually awakens to the child's firm opposition and resolutely pours out the drink mixed with water, finally ushering in a new peak. The movie was initially planned to adopt the objective perspective of a cold spectator, but it still needs to be realized for some reason. But, the original intention of pursuing the reality of life as far as possible was basically carried out.
