The Ladies of Llangollen - Sarah (Sally) Ponsonby and Eleanor Butler - were two Irish women - one Protestant, one Catholic - who refused to be bound by the repressive conventions and expectations of 18th century patriarchal society. Taking inspiration from lesbian surrealist artist and resistance activist Claude Cahun, ancient Irish music, pagan Celtic and folkloric iconography, SALLY LEAPT OUT OF A WINDOW LAST NIGHT imagines the ‘origin story’ of this rebellious, brave and determined romantic couple before they reached Wales where they were to settle and live an unconventional and inspiring life together for 50 years.
