Synopsis

Erem is a free-spirited college student who dreams of winning a dance competition, taking the medical exam, and building her career. Still, her closest kin, including her grandmother Shagufta and father Ali, was adamant about marrying her off to a London-based banker, proposed by their intimate acquaintance Maulana with a condition. A condition that shrieks for the pain and humiliation of generations, Allen has to be "pure". Shagufta, who thinks being pure is associated with sunnat (FGM), is ready to perform the excruciating ritual by cutting her clitoris with a blade. Erem's mother, Tabassum, who went through the same at a tender age, on the other hand, desperately wants to save her daughter, but her meek demeanor and helpless character doesn't let her do the right thing. She still tries to talk to Ali, who shuns her. Erem is horrified by this news; her only hope is for her mother. Will Tabassum be able to save her daughter, or will Allen go through the same trauma? Zebah is a story of humanity, torment, religious beliefs, and, above all, Sacrifice.

Director's Statement

Despite the fact that we modern humans have made extraordinary progress in terms of science, resulting in a massive impact on our social lives by broadening the horizons of our mental world. However, even though so much progress has been made, many such social beliefs or activities still exist, which are totally unaligned with the progress we have made so far. One such unnatural practice is female genital mutilation in some social groups, including India. Sadly, female genital mutilation practice exists even today among some religious groups in India; the reason behind this is to keep young females deprived of experiencing sexual pleasure, one of the most essential gifts bestowed to humans by nature. Unfortunately, there is no Indian law that prevents us from practicing this unnatural and unhealthy outdated practice, which is risking the lives of many young females, violating human rights, and unnaturally depriving the victims of enjoying a natural gift from God. It's time that our law takes a strong stand against this unnatural practice and helps innocent females enjoy their natural lives.
