Good Night, Lily

Hidden in the darkness of her home, a lonely elderly woman tries to rearrange her life. Wandering in the labyrinth between reality, dream and imagination, she meets the ghost of her greatest love. Will their love conquer time and space or will the black hole of everyday life engulf it?

“Everything is full of something – even the air.” These are Dora’s last words in the film GOOD NIGHT, LILY. And what is the air full of? Dust. Tiny particles of dead skin, DNA which we all shed all the time. Full of memories, they float in the air. I wrote the script for the film following my grandma’s death. Her best friend told me about their friendship and I finally began to see her as more than a caring grandmother; she became a woman. So, I wrote a character who has aged on the outside but not on the inside. I wrote an old woman of 75 who is still madly in love with a young boy; I wrote her full of regret and I wrote her finding peace, shedding skin, filling her room with dust. GOOD NIGHT, LILY asks whether our dreams are written in our DNA; whether they die and separate from us; whether they haunt us in our homes until the last day. Writing it, I thought What if I never fulfil my biggest dreams? I imagined the pain and regret I would feel. So, the film takes place on the day after Dora finds out Adam, the love of her life, has passed away. They didn’t see each other for 30 years and now they will never be reunited. GOOD NIGHT, LILY is a search for self-forgiveness. I made this film for me. It is my way of learning to let go.
