Panel talk on Filmmaking in an age of streaming

Filmmaker Kiran Bhakta Joshi (Incessant Rain Studios) will be joined by producer Larry Kasanoff (True Lies, Terminator 2 Judgement Day, Mortal Kombat), writer/producer Zack Stentz (X-Men : First Class, Thor, Cody Banks), filmmaker Joylon Hoff (The Staging Post) and studio executive Damien de Froberville (Netflix, Paramount Pictures, Dreamworks) for the inside look at the journey of the cinematic experience. They will share their experiences in developing stories, packaging, financing and branding for both streaming and traditional distribution. They will discuss the opportunities and risks and how the digital media and entertainment sector is evolving. The discussion is designed to raise awareness to the Nepali filmmakers that there has never been a better time to create content for the international market.

Kiran Bhakta Joshi is the Co-founder & CEO of Incessant Rain Studios. His short film Mandala recently won Platinum Award at the Independent Shorts Awards and has been officially selected in several other film festival. Prior to Incessant Rain Studios, he was the Visual Effects Supervisor at The Walt Disney Studios where he worked on films such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Working as the Visual Effects Supervisor he managed the early development of Tangled and Frozen at Disney before leaving to establish Incessant Rain Studios.

He was the Co-director & Producer for the award wining documentary Moving Mountains: The Awakening. He also worked  as Executive Producer on Malibu Rescue, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Asura, A Million Ways to Die in the West. He was the Executive VFX Producer on Selma,  Chappie, Da Vinci’s Demons,  Stan Lee’s Lucky Man, Emerald City, Blood Drive,  The Expendables 3, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Meg, S.W.A.T., Red Sparrow, and many other films.

Larry Kasanoff, Chairman/CEO, is the Producer of all Mortal Kombat media which has grossed over USD 5 billion. He was the executive Producer of the box-office smash film, True Lies, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and directed by James Cameron. Previously, as president and co-founder of Lightstorm Entertainment, Larry supervised production, marketing, publicity and merchandising for the four-time Academy Award winning hit, Terminator 2 Judgement Day. He produced two movies with Academy Award winning director Kathryn Bigelow. Larry, as a producer and  studio head,  has made over 200 feature films, including Dirty Dancing and Academy Award Winning Best Picture Platoon. He has raised well over a billion dollars in the film business.

In the music world, Larry has packaged or produced video projects with several of the world’s biggest talents, including Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones and Dick Clark. For Terminator 2, he produced MTV’s top video of the year, “You Could Be Mine” with Gun’s ‘N Roses.

Zack Stentz
Zack Stentz

Zack Stentz is a writer and producer of film and television, novelist, and teacher.

He has co-written the films X-Men: First Class, Thor, Agent Cody Banks and many other films. Stentz’s most recent film is the science fiction adventure film Rim of the World, which he wrote and produced for Netflix with McG directing.  His films currently in development include Booster Gold at Warner Bros. and  Big Trouble in Little China at Fox. On the television front, he has developed tv shows Jurassic World: Chaos Theory,  The Flash, Fringe, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and several other. He currently is developing shows for Skydance Television, Warner Bros., and HBO.

Stentz also co-wrote the acclaimed young adult novel Colin Fischer, and is hard at work on a follow-up, the adventure/thriller Nevermore

Damien de Froberville
Damien de Froberville

Damien de Froberville is a seasoned executive in Film Production. Most recently at Netflix, Damien led the establishment of the animation studio and oversaw production to 83 series and 32 features at various stage.  He has led multiple organizations in both VFX, games and animation in Europe, North-America and Asia. Prior to Netflix, Damien was Executive Vice President of Animation at Paramount Pictures where he completed production of two ongoing feature films.

Prior to this Damien was General Manager of the DreamWorks Animation studio in India. He led the studio through the production of multiple animated features and rapid expansion. Prior to India, Damien was part of the leadership group of Shanghai based Virtuos which became one of the leading independent game developers. Damien is passionate about VFX and Animation distributed production and its continued expansion in Asia. 

Joylon Hoff
Joylon Hoff

Jolyon Hoff is an Australian documentary filmmaker and development communications specialist. He has spent nearly fifteen years developing, supporting and executing a wide range of film and media projects in diverse regions around the world; including West Africa, Indonesia, Nepal, the USA and Australia.

In the USA he made music videos with iconic Washington DC musicians, Thievery Corporation and Chuck Brown, directed a documentary about one of the biggest computer gaming companies in the world, Bethesda Softworks, and made TV commercials for PBS

In Nigeria, he established, managed and mentored a Media Production Hub in the post-conflict Niger Delta region of Nigeria, created the web series Nigeria Stories, shot numerous development films, and mentored and trained young Nigeria Filmmakers. 

In Indonesia he made a film about Aceh, ten years after a tsunami killed 160,000 people in province, which is now on permanent display at the Aceh Tsunami Museum. He also supported and mentored a group of Afghan refugees to make films and start a refugee-led school. A feature documentary he made about the process, called The Staging Post, was the 13th best performing documentary in Australian cinemas during 2017 and 2018 and was awarded Highly Commended ‘Best Stand-Alone Documentary’ by the Australian Director’s Guild.

In Nepal he established the Australia Nepali Film Exchange and has been a jury member and presenter at the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival.

Current projects include a feature documentary about the first world surfing champion Midget Farrelly, a virtual reality project in the Everest region, and supporting the upcoming Netflix feature film, Tenzing.
